Thursday Night

Stretch and tone and warm the muscles,
Strap on skates set to tussle,
Stride and sweat, pull and shove,
Smile and laugh, joy and love,
Exertion exhaustion one more lap,

Skating hard to close the gap,
Between the years behind you,
And expectations that bind you,
Between your goals found again,
And your everyday mundane,
Divas flying strong and swift,
Effortlessly spirits lift.

Love it.

I was listening to the radio on the way to work today when "She Blinded me with Science" began to stream across the airways and a verse provided an awesome derby name...Poetry N. Motion.

Your skates are "set to tussle?" If your writing ability is any indication of your skating ability, I feel sorry for you. There are commas everywhere (except for where they SHOULD be), and there is no discernible poetic value in this piece of work. Well, at least I found something to share with my writers' group. We often have "bad poetry" discussions and bring in examples of said work.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving a message Sharon. I'm glad you can get some use out of my “bad poetry”. I've never been quite sure how to use commas in poetry and since I’ve never really cared I just throw them in there whenever I feel like it. Don’t worry; I'm sure I'm better at skating than writing as I practice that more often. Thanks so much for your concern.

Should you ever want to learn roller derby, I’d be happy to give you some pointers. The skating community is usually very accepting of any skill level, we would welcome you with open arms and lots of encouragement.

I have thought for quite some time about finding a roller derby team near the Chicago 'burbs, but after reading your mud-slinging of the Rockford team you blog about so much, I don't think I'd want to be involved with your organization. It seems unprofessional to make such heated comments about another public organization, and I would rather not affiliate myself with a team that does not respect the other teams in the community.

My apologies for the frankness of my original comment. I did not intend to be so harsh. When I found your blog, you seemed like a very interesting, sincere person, but I became very disappointed when I read your seemingly malicious aspersions of the other team you mention in your roller derby posts. I got needlessly carried away with my criticism of your writing, and I apologize for that. You say you don't really care about how punctuation works, but good mechanics are a must in poetry. If you made more of an effort and practiced at it, you could definitely produce something worthwhile.

Respectfully,
Sharon

Hi Sharon,

Actually, we've been playing in Beloit which is North Central IL and South Central WI, not really the Chicago burbs. There are two very nice leagues in the Chicago land area you should at least go see once.

As far as mud slinging goes. I was just conveying to my family and friends why I wasn't skating with my old league anymore. It's hardly mudslinging if it's true and it's important news to the people who read my blog.

You should read ahead more often instead of dwelling back there on the couple of posts about the old league. There’s more derby news to be had in my life and it’s not with the Rockford league, they kicked me out.

Seriously, if you are at all interested in roller derby, I highly recommend it, and I highly recommend asking about how the organization works. A good league isn't afraid to answer those questions.

Even after all I went through; I have found the roller derby community with just a few exceptions to be very supportive and encouraging to each other, especially my own league.

I'll remember you next time I'm flinging needless commas around.
