The Universe is Stalking Me

While I’m in the practice of writing long cathartic entries here’s a nice one for a Monday afternoon read. Let me preface by telling you this is a true story and it takes place in a city of 150,115 people.

In high school Dan and Ben used to skateboard together. When I starting dating Dan we were in college and I was intrigued by his motley group of buddies. They were a group of roughly 9 who would drink Mountain Dew by the case and stay up all night becoming rouge skaters in canvas shoes and trench coats violating cement walls and steps all over the city with their skate boards. They were like brothers and yet easily accepted me into the bunch. If Dan loved me then I must be ok. In college, they no longer skated; instead we would hang out at Ben’s discussing philosophy and politics late into the night with his parents Bob and Barbara. We would drink coffee and wine and playing spades while we discussed the finer points of socialized medicine and talk about our dreams and ambitions until 3 or 4 in the morning. Sometimes around a bonfire and sometimes around the kitchen table, it was empowering to have a debate with someone you regarded as sophisticated and worldly. After all Ben’s parents had marched in the 60s, lived in two different countries, raised two obstinate children and they were talented in art of conversation.

One particular evening of discussion seared our connection forever. We were discussing the worst thing that had ever happened in our lives. I had just left photography class to meet Dan at Ben’s house and had a fresh set of photos of my dear cousin’s grave in my car. So naturally, I told my audience about how I had lost my best friend and cousin, Christine, to a drunk driver. She was only 14 and I miss her every day. I talked about how awful the news was when I had heard it and how I had collapsed on the stairs with the phone in my hand not wanting to believe a word. I was tearing up as I told the story.

Ben’s mother, Barbara, began to tell a similar story about how she and Bob were driving along one night and encountered a lone little girl in the middle street who’d been hit by a car. Barbara had jumped out of the car and sat down on the cement and held the girl in her arms, soothing her and crying while she died. Ben’s Dad went to call for help while cars just drove on by. Then Barbara proceeded to name the exact date and street where my Christine had been killed. The whole room went silent as we both realized it was the same story. We continued to verify details… the name of the lady that hit her, what she was wearing that night, what the paper said about it the next day, and finally her name. We sobbed and hugged while the rest of the company looked at us in disbelief. I can still hardly believe it, but it happened and now I know.

So let me have it folks – I want to hear your “The Universe is Stalking Me” story and I in turn, promise that if the sun comes out tomorrow I will be back posting something short and funny.

Wind

The wind is whipping outside and when it blows past our front doors it gets tangled up in a pocket in the siding and makes a spooky whistle. It’s been whistling at me all morning, when it does Ella looks at me wide eyed and whispers “scared”. They sky is totally grey. Tree skeletons line our street; their former adornments a soggy pile in the gutter. The charm of fall is over and the coldness is creeping in.

Accomplishments for 2005

I started thinking about our Holiday letter and mentally listing successes and other happy things to write about. There’s plenty of happy things but I’m a little down. My victories aren’t really the kind you can put in a Holiday letter.

Things I am Proud of:

  • Nursed a baby on demand into toddler-hood
  • Didn’t break a toe stepping on “Little People” in the middle of the night
  • My toddler chooses to sleep in her own bed (sometimes)
  • My toddler can use a fork, spoon, “Thank you” and “Welcome”
  • Kept my cool during the poop in tub ordeal
  • Read 4 novels
  • Managed to brush my teeth and comb my hair every day
  • Shaved my legs every day this summer
  • Made it through surgery
  • Established a monthly night out with friends and then actually went
  • Blogged, blogged, blogged
  • Doodled a children’s book for Ella called “Ella’s Potty Book”
  • Didn’t start smoking
  • Had my toddler believing that raisin were candy
  • Kept in touch with family
  • Fit into a size of clothing that I feel good about
  • Made lots of lists
  • Saw two R rated movies

These are way too personal for the letter – but not too personal for the internet folks. That’s right dear readers, you get the poo in tub but Aunt Dawn gets spared – lucky you.

Ciao

Ella has taken to saying "Hi" and "Bye" to everything. This morning as we lay in bed just waking to the sunlight, Ella rolls over a finds a piece of lint on the sheet - "Hi Lint!". Last night on the way home she proclaimed her love for the moon "Love you moon, bye moon" as we went from car to house. Today I've heard "Hi blanket", "Hi boots", "see ya later spoon" and I almost died when she got in the tub with a "Hi naked!"

A True Story of Happenstance and Love

A True Story of Happenstance and Love

I walk into the hobby shop/used book store with my husband who is going to be hypnotized by the comic books and toy soldiers for the next 25 minutes. I decide as usual to get lost in the stacks of second-hand books in the back. I’m such a sucker for classics and humor but today there’s no new humor, just a lot of Erma Bombeck and classics are a bust as well. Who needs two ratty copies of “Lord of the Flies”? I peruse the new arrivals looking for anything interesting. My eye lands on a book of poetry. It’s a small, red, hard bound, just my style. I pick it up and see Poems of Love. I don’t really subscribe to romance in general. In fact I warned my husband if he ever bought me roses and a lovey little teddy bear on Valentines Day I’d promptly divorce him. I’m more of a dirty limerick great bottle of wine kinda gal. I put the book back.

Stacks and stacks loom ahead and I walk through the endless hallway of romance novels and then the looming wall o’ sci-fi. I’m not finding anything so I find Dan. There he is talking to Jason, crap we’re going to be here even longer. I wonder back into the books, it’s hard to imagine that all these books have been read. Some are dog eared and well loved; you can see how many times the spine has been cracked open. I always assume the ones that look new aren’t very good, they haven’t been loaned to the neighbor or re-read on vacation. I imagine they’ve been looked at once or twice and then traded in here at the book cemetery. Some books sit for so very long on the shelves that every visit I look at their familiar old spines like visiting an old aunt in the nursing home. Yep, there she is
How to Keep Slim, Healthy and Young With Juice Fasting and good old Architecture in Spain: Journal Articles Published 1970-1985. I wonder what will become of them.

I look out into the store and Dan is immersed in the bargain bin – I’ve got at least 10 more minutes. I’m back at the new arrivals wall. There it is again, the little red book. I have now wandered around these books so long I feels like it would be sacrilege to not buy something, so I pick it up. Maybe it has some good poetry in it. I open to the Contents page and find a long list of love poems and hey, someone has underlined their favorites! I just love finding books that people have written in. It feels like you are taking a peek into their psyche and how personal to find a book of love poems that has been written in. I’m so definitely getting this book. Look they’ve underlined The Flowers Name by Robert Browning, Sonnet by William Shakespeare, The Lady’s "Yes" by Elizabeth Barret Browining, Adam & Eve by John Milton, and oh delight! They’ve underlined Annabel Lee by Edgar Allen Poe. I Love Poe, this underliner has picked some of my favorites! I am sooo getting this book. Oh hey look there’s an inscription in the inside cover…

Jen
Read, and know my love.

… It’s my husband’s handwriting. It’s unmistakable, it’s his. He has the worst, most recognizable, left slanting way of inventing his own letters. I’m sure of it… Jen is his ex-girlfriend just before me. I’m sweating. I put in back on the shelf. I pick it up. I put in back on the shelf. I pick it up again. It can’t be – I find Dan. “Honey? Wanna see something funny?”. Dan looks, “Hm”. That’s all he says??!! Hm. Oh crap, I have to hear him say it… “Is that your handwriting?” am I mad he loved before me, or that he was never an immature foolish mush around me? I warned him not to be an immature foolish mush, maybe I want him to be a foolish mush, maybe he can contain the foolish mush when he’s with me ‘cause his love is containable… crap, I’m over thinking this. “Yep, that’s my handwriting, were in the world did you find this?” he says. Freaking duh! “Where do you think I found it?” oh God, that sounded mean and crabby, why am I even mad? I’m so NOT getting this book. “Give it here; I’ll just put it back.” I snap. “Are you mad?” he asks “Nope” is all I can muster. I can’t even help it now I don’t even know why I’m upset. I put the book back on the shelf and find Dan.

I am sulking and my mind is racing, can I just leave that book on the shelf for someone else to buy? They’ll buy it and think how nice it is that this man loved this woman so much he gave her poems. Well screw that! He doesn’t love her anymore! He never really knew what love was till he met me! Screw them thinking that! I have to have that book. I go back and pick it up. I buy it and then the inscription will be sitting on my bookshelf, in OUR house, it would be like he is cheating in OUR library for eternity and our children will look in the book and SEE it. They will catch him in the act! Maybe I’ll buy it and then burn it. I’ve gone insane… I put the book back.

Dan walks over, he knows I am clearly upset. I can see the desperation in his eyes, I know, it’s just too weird – how can he fix this for me? I tell him “Darling, you are going to buy this book for me and you are going to change the Jen to Jenny”. Dan looks relived. He buys the book and asks the guy at the cash register for a pen. The “ny” is added and now the book can come home with us. I don’t think I will probably ever read the book though. It’ll just sit on the shelf next to the books that Dan meant to buy for me and our children will never know the difference.

What would you do?

A Blogger's Nightmare

From today’s paper Annie’s Mailbox entitled “Granny’s Journal may be helpful to someone”

Dear Annie: My grandmother died 15 years ago and left me all of her journals because she thought I would treasure them. There are more than 200 of them sitting in 20 boxes in my parent’s garage. I have read through a couple, but am not interested in the rest and don’t think I ever will be. I would like to dispose of them, but I feel guilty about it.

My parents are moving soon and will no longer have room to store the journals. No one else in the family wants them. I do not think a historical society would have any interest, because they are rather boring. More important, my grandmother wrote about personal situations of family and friends that are not for public consumption.

Everyone thinks I should have them professionally shredded. I don’t want to destroy an irreplaceable historical record that was entrusted to me, but I can’t deal with these journals anymore. I wish they had never existed.

Are there any other options? -Rachel in San Francisco

Dear Rachel:
You ungrateful brat, why don’t you move your ego over and make room for your grandmother’s heart and soul poured out onto paper. If you don’t want to look at them get a lock box at the bank and store them there for your children’s children. Get your head out of your ass. -Jenny

Would anyone like to add anything?

Dear Ben,
Last night we went and saw the movie Jarhead. Crap it was good. It wasn’t for or against war it was just snap shot of one Marine’s very frustrating experience during Desert Storm. So of course Dan and I thought of you. We talked for some time about what to send you. I’ve decided to send you a reminder of what things here are like right now.

As I walk out into the back yard the crisp autumn air sneaks right down into my collar. It’s not cold enough yet for my breath to be seen but it is cold enough to be wearing my favorite old wool sweater. I put Ella down in the long grass. It’s too long and dotted with crunchy leafs but it has stopped growing since it frosted last week so there’s no use in mowing. Ella runs out to the swing-set that Mrs. Smith from up the street passed down to us. Her grandkids are too cool to be caught dead on a swing much less the little blue plastic slide attached to it besides you can’t swing in a Paris Hilton skirt – it’s un-lady like. Ella doesn’t know anything about that yet and yells “Fwing Mommy! Poosh Ella? Poosh Ella?” I put her into the toddler swing and give her a push. Behind her the neighbor’s Maple tree has turned fiery orange. A color that people don’t expect to see in nature or maybe only in deep exotic coral reefs, but there it is school bus orange painted across a blue sky. It’s startling and amazing almost worth giving up warm summer days for.

Tonight will be the Indians’ chance to advance in the playoffs. The town is buzzing with it, there are homemade purple and yellow signs all over and earlier today a parade of cars decorated with soap and streamers drove through town with cheerleaders hanging out the windows and honking the whole way. We stepped out on the front porch and waved at the cars and the other neighbors who had stepped out to witness the commotion. Ella is still waving at every car that goes by thinking they will honk and cheer with her.

I give her a big push in the swing and sit down in the chilly lawn furniture to do the crossword and drink my reheated coffee. She gleefully tips her head back and discovers something special and new to her “Momma birdzzs!” “Yes, sweetie those are geese and they are flying south for the winter. She mumbledee-petes what I just said managing to get out a clear “Winter!” at the end. I say “Birdies are going bye bye honey.” This she immediately understands and repeats clearly, I look back to my crossword. Somewhere in the neighborhood there is a dog barking, at a squirrel no doubt. The squirrels are storing up hickory nuts and acorns right now, running hither and thither out into traffic and across the power lines, little tails teasing fenced dogs all over the place.

Somewhere in the neighborhood there is a fireplace burning what I think I recognize as oak. It’s a shame they don’t let people burn leaves any more, I understand that it isn’t nice for people with asthma but I miss the smell just the same. Once in a while when I’m driving through farm country, past all the cut corn stalks and freshly empty fields, someone will be out smoldering leaves in the ditch. I always crack the window a little and take in as much of the familiar old autumn smell as I can. Perhaps Ella will think that autumn smells like the first time you turn on your furnace and all the dust burns off, or perhaps I can impress hot cider into her memory instead.

This is a nice time in the Midwest. It’s exciting to see the landscape change and familiar sweaters come out of the closet. We aren’t yet worried about Christmas shopping and Halloween is out of the way. It’s just football, hockey and Thanksgiving, and that’s what folks talk about in polite conversation. “So, ya cookin’ for everyone?” or the all too common “How bout those Bears/Indians/Packers?” can be heard at any instant in the post office. Sometimes people are so polite around here I bet if you pinched them in the butt they’d apologize for being in the way of your fingers. I’ve never had the nerve to try it though I bet if I dared you – you would.

Wish you were here. Love,
Jenny

PS From my own back yard this summer I found this four leaf clover – I think I need you to have it.

TV Toddlers

I am a firm believer in attachment parenting. This means I wore Ella in a sling until she didn’t fit into it any more, I’m still breast feeding her and yes, she sleeps with us most nights (unless her little heart is set on sleeping with Ernie and Monkey-monkey and she wants her own bed). We pretty much let her have anything she wants within reasonable safety. We let her climb on the dining room chairs and stand on them, we let her run crazy around the house and we let her choose what she wants to wear. Given the style of parenting we are trying to draw on, we are having some technical difficulty.

TV is the contraption in question. My husband (very smart man) was raised on TV. I was junked out in front of the TV most days of my childhood (I’d like to believe I’m reasonably smart). Ella loves to watch the television. She asks for “Charlie and Lola” in the morning, I make sure to tune in “Jack’s Big Music Show” twice a day, we sometimes watch “The Wiggles”, and then there’s “Oobie”. These are all educational programs with no commercials. If you add just these shows up she watches 2 and ½ hours of TV a day. Not every day, sometimes we forget or are busy out and about but most days this is what she watches (some days more). I’d say we are heavy users of the ol’ boob-tube. I keep hearing the latest study that children under 2 shouldn’t watch TV at all and children over 2 shouldn’t watch more than 2 hours of educational TV. The study shows that these kids are less likely to graduate and lag in language skills and will probably grow up to be indigent drug dealers and hookers (damn that Ernie!)

Ok, so I feel guilty about the amount of TV she watches and am trying constantly to remember to shut it off. Dan thinks it’s not how much she’s watching it's what she’s watching.

He believes she should watch as much TV as she likes (after all he did) and we should just make sure she’s not watching CSI or the Surreal Life. (His parents never hassled him about watching too much TV, they would eat dinner around the TV as a family – I would describe them as a greaser and a poodle skirt wearer, later a factory worker and housewife who let Dan eat Wonder bread and Twinkies – got a picture in your head?)

I think the issue is more about pacing: If a child thinks the world should move to the next thing as soon as it gets the slightest bit boring and that everything absolutely everything is entertaining and everyone on the block sings (although we do a lot of singing around here) then their nueropathways develop in a way that expects constant entertainment rendering the real world utterly boring. (My parents hated TV we didn’t even have one for a bit, they called it the “boob-tube” – they were hippies, later an entrepreneur and engineer who insisted if I wanted something sweet to eat there was plenty of apples in the pantry - got a picture?)

This has been an argument we’ve had more than once and I’m doing a little research on it today and getting no-where. Is it “how much” or “what” she watches that is damaging folks? What's your take on it?

Where are the Monkeys?

This morning while lying in bed I heard Dan walking around downstairs cussing and rifling through things. I yell down the stairs "What are you looking for?" He yells back "Monkeys." I blink and rub my eyes (as if that will make me hear any better)... did he just say monkeys? "Ella was playing with monkeys and my wallet yesterday and now I can't find them" he adds. OH - awake now 'my keys', he's looking for 'my keys'. I yell "Wake her up and ask her what she did with them." He woke her and very carefully asked "Where's Daddy's wallet?" as if he were playing the where's puppy game. She was delighted to play and walked right over to one of her many purses and pulled out his wallet. He found his keys in a different sparkly pink purse hanging in the vicinity. Crisis narrowly averted.

Finding Marge aka The Mommy Jean Chronicles

Here it is the long awaited much anticipated Mommy Jean Study, affectionately known as “Finding Marge”. All photos are of the same person on the same day in two different pair of size 7-jeans (it’s me).

Study #1 – The Humpty Dumpty

I went out to my favorite local clothing resale shop and had pretty good luck finding my first pair of Mommy Jeans. I call them the Humpty Dumpty jeans. My dear friend Jennie came over to take photos. I put the jeans on and Jennie laughed so hard she almost peed. I walked past my husband and he exclaimed “Oh my god! I can’t even look; I think I need to wash my eyes!”

Booty Shot

As you see the Mommy jeans literally double the total bootockle area. If the rise of your jeans (the rise refers to the space between your crotch and the top of the jeans) brings the jeans well above your belly button, toss ‘em. Ladies it is making your butt look twice as big.

The Mommy jeans created instant “camel toe” I’m not sure why or what causes this effect. It’s a definite crotch cut problem. Lesson here - always try on jeans at the store and ALWAYS check for camel toe.*

*Note: There were no actual camels harmed during shooting of the camel toe.

By no means do I have what is referred to as an “apple butt” I wish I did, I have a slopey sliding off rear. The Mommy jeans make the slidey rear appear as if it has already slid. Please also note how saggy it makes the boobies look. The bulge just above the mommy jeans is in fact the boobies – see the overlay picture (#3) for confirmation. All I can say here is ‘oh-my!’ Again, pay attention to the rise of the jean, if they make it to the bottom of your bra – then your boobies will certainly be at your waist.

While the uterus is a wonderful beautiful and miraculous thing and should be celebrated in many ways it should NEVER be upholstered in denim and displayed out into the middle of the room like an ottoman.

Tapered legs really seem to accentuate the wideness of the hips. The giant tote bag and tucked in shirt seem to round out rest of the mommy costume.

Conclusion: I believe I found a bit of Marge today. These jeans were very comfortable and in no way attractive to anyone in the room. Prolonged use of these jeans could possibly lead to severe sex deficits and crabbiness all around.

Please join us next month for Study #2 the “Bleavage Jean”. So named for the butt-cleavage, popularized by young mommies who are too young to let go of their youth and too… well… too mommy shaped to be wearing super tight hip huggers with whale-tail** peeking out.

It Just Makes Me Tired

Here I sit for the Nth day in a row by myself. My husband is having a much deserved and rare night out with his friends. I realize I have loads to be thankful for. I’m not displaced by some horrid natural disaster, all my relatives are alive and safe, no one is trying to mutilate my privates with a sharp rock or broken bottle, nobody is trying to rape the women in my family to punish the men in my family, my husband isn’t in another country fighting a war I don’t support and my marriage is together and happy.

Ok here it comes anyway – my second rant of the day. I'm in some mood huh? That's ok 'cause This blog is about ME and MY feelings, so there!

###

My dear husband is involved in community government. He gets paid very little for what he does and it means so much to him to be able to serve our community. I’m sure he would give his life for another yet he has chosen to serve his country with his brain instead of his body. I am quite proud of what he does and he does it in addition to his 50 hour a week day job.

Even though I wouldn’t change a thing, here’s my complaint. I am sick and tired of people thinking that all politicians are slimy ass holes who are just out for themselves. It's like thinking your local Little League must be on the juice because McGuire's arms are like a gorilla's. Local politicians work their solemn asses off, reading periodicals, hearing complaints, sorting out convoluted law and taking phone calls from Grandpa Crabbass at 7:30 am on a Saturday to go and look at his 2 inch puddle. These same politicians give up evenings with their families to attend committee meetings, write ordinances, go look at how that tree leans over that garage and tour waste water facilities plants just to serve ‘we the people’.

Sometimes he is only home two nights a week and one of those nights he spends doing things like taking the window air conditioner out and mowing the lawn and making sure our ceiling isn’t falling in. This leaves few precious hours for family time. It makes me exhausted in the sense that it is her and me, me and her, her and me all day every day, no breaks. When she falls and skins her knee she only wants mom, when it’s bed time it’s mom, when her tantrum needs to be interpreted it’s mom. When she looks out the window for Dad I have to call him and put him on speaker so his little girl can say to him “Daddies working?” a phrase she knows all to well, it just makes me tired and a little sad. This is the trade we make for our country.

I’m not asking for sympathy. I don’t have to worry about my husband coming home with his leg blown off from a suicide bomber. I get to sleep next to him every night. I’m not even asking for help taking the garbage out – I’m just asking for people to think before they speak. We don’t get out of speeding tickets or get any special parking, in fact we don’t get any special perks. That’s ok, we do it for the same reasons our young people join the armed forces, for the love of country and community, not for the recognition and definitely not for the pay. So, please, just please, don’t kick my husband around just because he’s a politician, he’s out there working for everyone and we here at home miss him.

Today's Ella Report

She's finally awake and is happily eating her weight in grapes right now. When she's done we have a date with a swing outside. I'm so pleased that the warm wheather has stuck around.

Dan won't be home tonight so we are going out, just the two of us. I'm not sure what we're going to do yet but it's going to be super fun. We might go to a bagpipe square dance, or we'll go spend heaps of money at the book store on more cookies and books, or we may just go see a movie.

Just a side thought -
Ella thinks that there are several things in the universe named after her;
  • Ella-gators
  • Ella-vators (which she confuses with above mentioned)
  • Ella-phants
  • The part of the alphabet that goes Ella-menno-pee
  • Cinder-Ella
  • Gore-Ellas
  • Umber-Ella
  • Motzer-Ella cheese

Left to my own devices:

My dear child is sprouting four teeth this week. They hurt and it makes her tired and crabby and she wants to nurse all the time. This makes my boobies tired and crabby as well. Luckily today she fell asleep at 11:00 and is still happily napping. Left to my own devices so early in the day I have eaten 3 fun sized snickers, 2 chocolate chip cookies and bagel with garlic and cream cheese, a piece of cheese and half a cup of instant coffee. I’ve caught up on all my blog reading, cut my finger nails, put on mascara, looked at my butt in these jeans twice, petted the dog, and done the crossword, pretty soon I’ll have no excuse to keep me from cleaning.

"We don't have any confidence in anything he might propose here..."

What the hell is wrong with people? This morning’s top new stories include “Lohan Confronts Dad in Video”, and the “FBI May Have Bugged Marilyn Monroe”. I am so tired of people pretending that there is no news outside of the Freaking Good ol’ God Blessed US of A. I know dear readers that you are informed and intelligent and more enlightened than the general public, so please don’t feel like I’m yelling at you. Perhaps I should direct my anger towards the media. Even I can’t blog about war every day – but for the love of freaking Kilmer & Downey I am just a blogger not a MAJOR source of media.

Finding Marge

I finally found the SNL ad "Mom Jeans". I really am surprised that there isn't more information out there for those poor kids doing a search on “mommy butt” or “mommy jeans” for their science projects. I have taken it upon myself to start scouting around in my own neighborhood for the overly abundant mommy costume. I will then try and take photos to post as an example and a warning to you people out there, oh and for the children doing their science projects and book reports or whatever. I will be calling this project “Finding Marge”.

I’m sorry if I’ve already offended anyone named Marge, I’m sure you or whomever it is that you know is very nice. I’ll explain; when I was growing up, there was a lady on our block who had lots of kids and a huge mouth and embodied the term nag. She always wore those tight mommy jeans, and in the summer a terry cloth
boob tube and flip flops. In my memory she is hollering out the back door with a cigarette in one hand and a pitcher of Kool-aid in the other, she is yelling “Terry! Becky! Git your fuckin’ asses in the house right now!” I had been in their house a few times and it was one that always smelled like soup, not because they were actually having soup, it was just the entire house was stained with soup smell. This is still a mystery to me. Perhaps my next study will be about house-smell, but I digress.

“Finding Marge” will be an ongoing community project. Please feel free to send in any shots you have. I will start with the ones I pulled from the SNL ad and then I will be moving on to my own booty in Mom Jeans. This phenomenon is so interesting to me is because as you will soon see this wardrobe atrocity is a choice. I will prove it by putting my booty in two different pairs of jeans. I be procuring a pair of mom jeans tomorrow at the Salvation Army. I’m not saying that mommy butt isn’t at all biologically driven, there is a definite shift in fat deposits after one bears a child I am just floored by those who choose to accentuate the… well Marge-ness of it all.

Pricker Pete

Ella and I carved pumpkins in the afternoon yesterday. We had the following conversation:

Me: “I’m going to open this pumpkin!”
Ella: “Open pah-kin?”
Me: “Yes, I’m going to open it and then we can scoop the guts out.”
Ella: “Scoop gutzs?”
Me: “Yep. Hrmmmmf, grrrrp… arrrrrg.” After much struggling I finally get the pumpkin open “Look at that puny, wanna get some guts out?”
Ella: “Icky part.”
Me: “Yeah, it’s kinda icky, want to scoop some out?” as I am scooping
Ella: “Nah – icky part” she gets down from her chair and leaves to go play

I scooped and carved what I believe to be thickest pumpkin ever. I'm sure Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater kept his wife in a pumpkin shell like this.

When Trick-or-treating came Ella was all dressed and practiced. She’d been walking around all day saying “Nah-nah-knock! Pricker Pete!” When we reached the first house Ella’s “Pricker Pete” couldn’t be found, in fact all cute phrases in general hid in the back of the van. “See ya wayder” peeped out the window once in a while and I think “Thank you” stayed at home altogether. Ella had much more fun handing out candy from our house and it wasn’t long before “Pricker Pete” found his way home. Standing on the front porch awaiting the next bunch of monsters and princesses coming down the sidewalk, Ella would yell as loud as she could “Hey! Pricker Pete!”

The yellow boots were not part of her butterfly costume but I wasn't going to wrestle her out of them.

Immersed in a Gourd

There was an article in yesterday’s paper about the religious perils of Halloween. So I decided I would do a little research for today’s post. I found people who claimed that Halloween traditions came from the virgin sacrificing pagans who would burn human fat made candles in their pumpkins to ward off spirits and revel in hedonistic rituals while worshipping the god of the dead. I read about Catholics who replaced pagan holidays with catholic holidays to help boost their patronage and then there’s begging for soul cakes on All Saint’s Day in exchange for promises to pray for one’s ancestors to hurry out of purgatory and make it to heaven. Of course, there’s Druids who celebrated their deceased ancestors by honoring the harvest and the end of the farming season and the beginning of the cold and waning of the sun. I read about fairies playing pranks in villages like tipping outhouses and scattering the ash can driving organizations to push good wholesome Halloween parties where the kids bob for apples and wear costumes and dance. Stuart Schneider writes in 'Halloween in America' (1995) “…that neighborhood committees and local city clubs such as the Boy Scouts mobilized to organize safe and fun alternatives to vandalism. School posters of the time call for a “Sane Halloween.” Good children were encouraged to go door to door and receive treats from homes and shop owners, thereby keeping troublemakers away… By the 1930’s, these “beggar’s nights” were enormously popular and being practiced nationwide, with the “trick or treat” greeting widespread from the late 1930s." Novelist Wesley Lowe writes perhaps the most interesting piece yet about witches and their broomsticks. “When setting out for a Sabbath, witches rubbed a sacred ointment onto their skin. This gave them a feeling of flying, and if they had been fasting they felt even giddier. Some witches rode on horseback, but poor witches went on foot and carried a broom or a pole to aid in vaulting over streams. In England when new witches were initiated they were often blindfolded, smeared with flying ointment and placed on a broomstick. The ointment would confuse the mind, speed up the pulse and numb the feet. When they were told "You are flying over land and sea," the witch took their word for it.”

For me - Halloween is an excuse to dress and act as one’s alter ego for one night. It’s a reason to get outside and talk to each other and survey the front yard of the neighborhood. It is the last reason to mow the yard. It is a welcomed indulgence for our kids. It is the only time to invite a child to immerse down into the messy guts of a gourd and scoop it all out with bare hands squeezing the slimy seeds through little fingers, seeds that will be toasted with a dash of salt and eaten while they’re still warm. It is the first celebration of a the bountiful harvest ending on Thanksgiving Day when the harvest gives way to shopping till we’ve bought enough for baby Jesus and retailers to be rolling in their jubilation. It is a reason to light candles and cackle into the cool night air. It is the beginning of a long dark night where we cocoon in sweaters and turtle necks and the sandbox is covered until the world unwraps and blooms again.

Happy Halloween!

You are marching in it

A few weeks ago Ella and I were at our local farm implement/home improvement store and where we spotted adorable yellow galoshes in Ella’s size. We tried them on and Ella immediately dubbed them her “marching boots” and proceeded to march around the store singing (This is a mix of two Laurie Berkner songs “My Boots” and “We are the Dinosaurs…marching marching”). We bought the marching boots. Ella often puts them on before bed and marches around yelling/singing “B!--O!--O!--T!--S!--BOOTS! – in my marchy boots, in my marchy boots, my yellow marchy boots!” The last couple of nights she’s tried to go to bed wearing her marching boots. What follows can only be described as trying to rip my daughter’s most greatest, loveyest, only thing she needs in the whole world off her feet, sometimes involving two parents. We have a family bed and I refuse to sleep with yellow rubber boots. I was really hoping her “lovey” would be a soft little pink blanket or even a ratty old teddy. Last night we promised Ella she could put them on first thing in the morning.

This morning Ella literally jumped out of bed “Mommy! Gep-up, boots!” is what she said. “Yes, Honey you can wear your boots this morning.” She climbed down and put them on. I lay there miserable with my stuffed nose and gigantic sinus headache; I did not want to move. Ella ran back and forth at the end of the bed “BOOTS! My marchy boots!” right where we had left off. Not a terrible morning, until I looked over the side of the bed and realized my very old and decrepit dog had gotten up sometime between Dan left and I got up and puked all over the floor right next to the bed into my dirty clothes pile. I got up a little faster than I had planned and realized it was much worse. The dog had been really sick and had pooed all over near the foot of the bed… Ella had run back and forth through it yelling her boots song. Let me paint the picture - here was me stuffy head, snot running onto my upper lip, in my underwear, bed head, my contacts crusted to my eyes, dog cowering near the stairs because I am yelling “hold still! I have to get your boots off!” I am wrestling poopy boots off the screaming toddler in PJs while standing in pukey dirty clothes.

I had coffee before I went back into the bedroom to clean and I’ve saved the boots on the back porch for Dan to hose off. I just couldn’t take any more. But Ella keeps running to the back door asking for her beloved boots.

I almost spit coffee out my nose when I read my horoscope today:
“If life is a parade, you are marching in it – none of that standing on the sidelines and watching the spectacle pass you by! So wear comfortable shoes today – metaphorically and literally. You have a lot of ground to cover.”

5:00 Update: The house is totally clean - due to this morning's shennannigans spilling over into a total cleaning spree and Dan came home early and is soaking the boots in bleach in the basement sink. It's Thursday night and all my favoriute junky TV shows are on tonight! So folks the day did get better for me.

2KY

So I haven’t posted anything political for some time. That bugs me because this blog was going to be my outlet for political rage. I just can’t seem to muster up enough EXTRA energy to kick the party when it’s down. I mean I have laundry and dishes and on top of that the sniffles. Besides the party is imploding on it’s own, what does a quiet stay at home mom have to add to the heap of the giant pile of shit that has fallen on the Republican party that will change anything? Well, I just can’t stand by – so I’ve decided to share this link…2000. (put your headphones on)

I’ll feel the need to follow this up by again saying “Don’t confuse the war with the warrior! I support our troops!”

BAAAAAHB!

Another day of Blah at Bombadee's Garden
  • Our first heating bill for October (when we barely used the furnace at all) was $180.00. This month was estimated based on our usage from last October. I may have to sell a kidney to pay my heating bill in November.
  • Every time Ella walked past Bob (the plasterer) up there on the ladder she’d look up and yell “BAAAAAHB!” he would say “What Ella?” and then Ella would walk away. When Bob left at the end of the day yesterday Ella asked “Where’s my Bob going?”
  • We bought the $100.00 furniture warranty with the new living room furniture. The dog puked up something yellow on the club chair. It stained and they can’t get the stain out without fading the fabric so they ordered a new chair and ottoman for me. Now I will have two big blue chairs, but one of them will have a yellowish stain on the seat.
  • I have a cold and it’s making my eye balls and my neck hurt. I told Ella I had an "ouch on my head" and she petted the top of my head.

Peruvian Ragamuffin

We set up scaffolding on Saturday morning to put in new ceiling fans and make ceiling repairs which involved putting many men I care about up so high that it made my toes hurt to even look. Instead of hanging around with aching toes, I gathered up my Mom and Ella and we went to the apple orchard. We bought pumpkins, fed the animals, ate popcorn and apple donuts, sat on tractors and drank hot cider. I didn’t bring a warm enough coat for Ella so I wrapped her up in my scarf. She looked like a little Peruvian Ragamuffin. She stood there shivering and asking “More goat?” I figured she wouldn’t get frostbite so we stayed out till my chin was numb. Indulgent you say? Well, I didn’t go to the apple orchard to JUST buy over priced pumpkins. (Actually mom bought).

The Casseroles had a fine meeting on Saturday night, although the consensus is the microbrewery we went to serves beer that guarantees a headache. Too bad cause their stout tastes great. We had lots of top secret Casserole discussions including “What we call our most sacred fleshy bits”, “I have a gay relative”, and the very popular “What my husband is secretly hoping we are doing tonight i.e.: ‘stripping classes’, ‘cat fight involving beer and white t-shirts’, and the ever coveted ‘we are too drunk so all the ladies came home with me for a pillow fight and sleep over’”. That’s all I can tell you about the night without being stripped of my Casserole status.

Sunday was spent cleaning with above mentioned headache. There we’re paint chips everywhere and dust on every surface. I’m still re-vacuuming today so that in the future if I have to ask Ella “What exactly were you thinking when you filled the neighbor’s roller skate to the brim with lotion?” I’ll know it wasn’t because she ate paint chips when she was a baby it’s just because my Mother hoped I had a child just like me. (Hi Mom! I still have your pumpkin in my trunk)

The Toddler Runway II

Last night she was spotted in the living room watching The Apprentice with her pooch. She was sporting a slouchy wool knit sweater dress and kitty cat moccasins. She was quoted as saying: "With this years natural gas prices and the state of global warming I think it's important that we conserve whenever possible and that is why you'll see me in more knits this season."

Bad Advice?

I'm just going to ramble, I've been thinking about your situation since lunch. And here’s what I just keep coming back to. If you love him, tell him. But you can’t expect a damn thing in return for your love. If you want to be by him and he invites you over – go. If you want to sleep with him – do it with every cell of your body. If you want to stay and talk – stay and talk. There is rarely security when doing things that are worth doing. Life is all a chance to be taken and the things that are most satisfying are always the hardest to initiate and the most intimidating: birth, love, apologies, sex, promises, success, death (I’m guessing on that last one being satisfying). There are no guarantees, just the journey. I really believe one should love without fear of loss; we are all going to die, maybe tomorrow on the highway, maybe in an easy chair after 62 years of marriage. The point is you have to let yourself be happy whenever and where ever you can get it*. If you only get to hang with the guy you can't stop thinking about three more times then enjoy those three times don't lament the times you won't have. Carpe diem, woman you’re too young to throw your hands up, we all are.

*Within the parameters of the law and reasonable self preservation. I know reasonable self preservation is possibly the real topic here and I’m not sure I can tackle that one yet.

This may very possibly be bad advice, but now I've said it and my brain can move on now like a song that is stuck in your head until you sing it.

The Toddler Runway this Morning

What is Ella going to be for Halloween? Perhaps we'll just let her dress herself and the neighbors can take guesses at what they think she is.

Pictured here: Ella comes down the runway wearing a lovely pair of last years fleece lined overalls with a plastic hula skirt from Tarjay and a homemade bright red sweater. She has accessorized the ensemble with a tutu on her head, and a toy cookie ring. On her feet - her favorite kitty moccasins.

It's a One Bath Day

If it could go slightly wonkey today - it did. It's not like everything went WRONG, it's just not right either. The silver lining to todays' cloud? The child did not puke on her shoes today, the dog did not run over and lick it up and there has only been a need for one bath so far.

I used to travel

I used to travel all over the US letting people pay me to tell them to stop running your company with their head in up their ass.

I loved this job.
1. I was paid plenty
2. -to tell people what to do
3. I traveled all expenses paid
4. Nice wardrobe
5. Room service
6. Maid service
7. Rental car
8. Challenging in every way
9. Insanely rewarding

10. Bonuses!
11. Respect via - I worked my way up from the very bottom
12. Impressive title

I hated this job.

1. Everyone laughed at my jokes ALL the time
2. New husband at home
3. New house
4. New puppy
5. Couldn’t sleep
6. Stomach hurt

I quit and took a nice office position that paid decent and I didn’t care about so much. I would be able to quit without looking back when it was time to stay home with the babies.

Today I am doing a few things for my Dad’s small construction company. He needed someone to do general office crap part time from their house. I volunteered and he pays me far too much – how do I know? Well, I’m still a consultant at heart. It’s killing me watching the way he runs his company. I hadn't offered any comments in the way of changing things till yesterday (it's seriously stressing me to see him so stressed). I told him that he needed to hand some responsibilities to his very competent employees - including me because he was paying me far too much. This morning he called with a very important task, I was so excited he took my advice! Here it was he is finally going to utilize my vast abilities.

He asked me to go to his house and switch the laundry around, get the mail and have another house key made.

Sunday Drive

Sunday Drive

Before we go, one of us finds some new obscure music on the internet and makes a CD and we go, sometimes I bring the crossword from the news paper, Dan and Ella always bring books. These are some of my most favorite times. There have been pumpkin patches, Easter egg hunts, vacations, long weekends, city trips, country trips, direct routes and scenic routes and the ‘I’m not telling you I’m lost’ routes, blizzards, rain storms, compact cars, trucks and minivans. Time seems to be put on hold when we’re in the car together.

Our best moments are in the car:

  • “Do you want to drive?” “No, I just want to bitch about how you drive”.
  • Dan’s crooning “I’ll stop the world and melt with you!” and Ella trailing along with a high pitched “Yoooooouuuuuuuuuuuuu!” and me giggling.
  • I am listening to NPR and Dan and Ella snoozing away inches from me.
  • String cheese and candy bars and watching for the next rest stop.
  • A reflective moment at the end of a night out, before we walk in to pick Ella up and bundle her sleeping into her car-seat, I say "Wanna make out or somethin'?" we both crack up.
  • I’m waking up and looking for my shoes amid the CDs, books, toys, empty juice boxes and potato chip bags all over the floor.
  • We are all singing “My mom has a lion on her head – ROOOOAAAARRR!” complete with the hand scratching the air motion.
  • We are munching hash browns with really bad coffee and thinking up toddler-friendly cuss words for the driver in front of us.

It is total contentment, the pressure is off, we are on our way and going just as fast as we are going. Nothing further can be done about; what time we are getting there, what we are wearing, what we forgot, who we brought, or for that matter world peace, unemployment and starving babies – there’s nothing you can do about it in the car so there’s no use even worrying.

Irresponsible Mom?

A member of our family warned me on Saturday that the “Lift-a-Flap” books that I buy for Ella are very dangerous. She saw something about them on 20/20 on Friday night. I replied “Oh, no! They are Ella’s favorites. She sometimes takes them to bed with her. What’s wrong with them?” The reply “I know she loves them, I paid attention to the story because I know you buy those for Ella, it turns out they’re flammable”. I wouldn’t kid you on this one folks – she said it with a straight face. I almost replied “Well, I’ll tell Ella not to read them while playing with her Baby’s First Blow-Torch.” Bless their heart, I know they meant well.

Movie Scenes that Make You Cry?

What movie scenes always make you cry?

I always tear up when extremely large groups of people sing. It has to be a really big group though. So when the
Blues Brothers are in church - I cry, even when the marching bands roll out in Drum Line – I cry, when they go “Down by the River to pray” in O’ Brother Where Art Though – I cry, but Annie singing "Tomorrow" - not so much. This also applies to sporting events - I tear up EVERY time the “Star Spangled Banner” is sung by the crowd or even "Take Me Out to the Ballgame". Hell, if we’re at a Hockey game and everyone starts to yell “Hey” together I start to crack. We once went to my niece’s cantata which consisted of 25 eight year olds singing “The Little Drummer Boy” out of tune – I sobbed the whole time. This partially explains why I don’t do well in church; I literally choke up when the congregation starts to sing. So if there’s a movie that has groups of people singing – I stay far away, it’s just too much emotion for me. It has to do with the power of unity in jubilation, that’s as far as I can try and understand it. You won’t catch me at the theatre for “The Gospel” but I’ll be getting a box of Kleenex and renting it.

Camel Toads

From Ask Leslie (10/12/05 - I think. I have no idea what news paper)

"Q: I hope you can help me with a problem I have with my godson. Last summer he vistied me for two weeks and plans to return in July. When cleaning out the room he stays in, I found an unfinished correspondence to a chum of his in his hometown. In it he says he to our local pool to "scout out some camel toads." (I believe that's what it said, He had spilled iced tea all over the desk when writing it, and damaged a lot of papers.) I'm concerned he is doing drugs. I tried to look for camel toads in a drug book, and I didn't find them, but I found references to some type of frog or toad that people in another country lick to hallucinate. I don't want to approach him on this until I have more information. He is a good boy in middle school whose parents do not even drink. Please let me know what camel toads are and how I might be able to tell if he is smoking, taking or licking them. Perhaps I should have talked to his parents, but I don't want to jump the gun. Is this something the local authorites need to be alerted to in order to protect other patrons at the pool or surrounding area? - A concerned and uninformed reader.

A: The iced tea did a number on the toads, so my younger, hipper coworkers tell me. What he undoubtedly wrote was "camel toes," a crude euphemism for , well , too-tight pants worn by females. The good news is that the expression has absolutely nothing to do with drugs. It has everything to do with why teenage boys go to the pool in the first place."

I think I peed a little I laughed so hard.
