I Jammed

This was my first game with the Rockford Rage. It was the Ragdolls vs IL Valley Vixens, a non-sanctioned WFTDA bout. We lost by two points in the last three jams 116-114. Not bad for our first time all playing together. We have a bunch of new skaters from other leagues this season, so it's been super fun making all new pals. This was also my first game back since my knee surgery. I wore the DonJoy knee brace and it worked pretty well. I think I did all right. I remember getting lead a few times and I remember knocking the other jammer down, but I also remember getting stuck behind blocker number 5 and her cohort for most of a jam and getting a major for cutting. So, this season I will concentrate on jamming and all the many things that requires.

I've been having dreams that I am getting ready to play, but I don't have all my pads, or I lost my favorite socks and I'm not ready. I think it's the same dream as when you find yourself at work or school without pants, but in derby if you find yourself without pants chances are that's on purpose. Next month's bout is October 13th. It's a mixer, meaning teams from everywhere are invited and all scrambled up and split down the middle. Mixers are pretty fun, you get to play next to people you normally don't and soak up new plays and knowledge as well as just have a fun time. Usually there is a theme and some crazy outfits... yes even more crazy than no-pants. You should come and watch. You should also cheer for the team I am on.

Getting Her Bearings
Last night was school skate night. The skate rink is as close to a grade school disco as it gets. Watching one little gangly girl clip clop across the floor with her arms doing a wild and jerky air-swim was as comical as watching another's dance moves in which she leaned way down low, bending at the waist doing a circle motion with her arms in perfect rolling down the river precision. This is where the lip gloss and fingerless gloves cease to be dress up items and become a totally serious part of one's style. It's where sitting on a wall becomes an art form in cool, not something Humpty Dumpty did and parents are the most un-hip people in the room. It's where toddlers strive to become feral children under the benches where the carpet glows bright and Cheetos are hitting the floor. For two glorious hours the world spins in screams of joy and shared nachos.

Brain Vacation Derailed
So it started I was watching film trailers at Apple and I clicked on “Step Up 2” one of those break dancing movies like the ones I loved so much in the 80s and I heard a song had to have. I spent the next 30 minutes tracking it down, it’s Cupid’s “369” and it samples “the Clapping Song” by Shirley Ellis (1965) which I hadn’t really heard either, but I used to hear the girls in the neighborhood singing this while playing double-dutch or clapping hands and so I paid a dollar for Cupid's version and Ella and I listened to it at least 5 times in a row last night and twice this morning.
While buying the song I decided to look for another song that was in an 80s dance movie called “Breakdance 2 Electric Boogaloo.” I used to skate to it in the 80s and recently at practice the new rink we were at dusted it off and played it. I’ve been thinking of it since then and it took me a considerable amount of time to figure out what it was called... it’s Din Da Da by George Kranz. I didn’t pay a dollar for surfing around trying to find it I did find Artemisbell on You Tube dancing to it. She dancing with such abandon, it’s so raw and true I almost feel like I’m intruding by watching. I went on to watch her do Zoot Suit Riot, Groove is in the Heart, Little Pretty One, White Wedding, Proud Mary, Rico Suave and the Safety Dance. She writes
This is a Dance Mania debute! If nothing else, perhaps you'll like the music. It's a new hobby for me anyway. It's my workout too! I'd like to thank and pay tribute to all the great song writers and musicians and celebrate this great music with my dance.
Dancing is not my discipline, but it sure feels good. I'm having the time of my life!
Thanks for watching and sharing my fun…”
Anyway - go watch Diane dance and hear Cupid's 369 it'll be fun.
